Ms. Uma Dogra
A Legacy of Rhythm and Grace
Uma Dogra is a preeminent Kathak virtuoso whose career has spanned over five decades, establishing her as a formidable force in the world of Indian classical dance. Based in Mumbai, she is widely recognized as the senior-most Ganda Bandh Shahgird of the legendary Jaipur Gharana maestro, the Late Pt. Durga Lal Ji. Her artistic journey began at the age of seven in New Delhi, where she initially trained under Guru Bansilal and Reba Vidyarthi at the Kathak Kendra before dedicating 18 years to the rigorous discipline of the Jaipur style. Her performances are celebrated for a rare synthesis of power and grace, blending the intricate rhythmic footwork of the Jaipur school with the nuanced emotional depth of the Lucknow tradition.
Beyond her prowess as a soloist, Uma Dogra is a visionary educator and cultural steward. In 1990, she founded the Samved Society for Performing Arts to preserve and promote the legacy of her guru. Through this institution, she curates two of Mumbai’s most significant annual cultural events: the Pt. Durgalal Festival, which features legendary masters of dance and music, and the Raindrops Festival, which provides a vital platform for emerging soloists. Her commitment to the next generation is further evidenced by her work at the Uma Dogra School of Kathak, where she has mentored numerous students, including several prominent figures in the Indian film and television industry.
Her immense contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors, most notably the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2014, conferred by the Government of India. Her accolades also include the Maharashtra Rajya Sanskriti Award, the Maharashtra Gaurav Samman, and an honorary Doctor of Arts from ITM University Raipur. Most recently, in 2024, she was honored with the Pandit Lacchu Maharaj Award for her lifelong dedication to the art form. As a cultural ambassador, she continues to represent India on international stages, recently leading a high-profile tour to Seychelles to showcase the timeless beauty of Kathak to global audiences.
Beyond her mastery as a performer and a Guru, Uma Dogra is a passionate advocate for India’s rich arts and crafts heritage. This deep-rooted appreciation for traditional craftsmanship naturally aligns her with the mission of India ODOP Promotions. We are truly honored to welcome an artist of her stature to our Advisory Board of Directors, where her vision will help bridge the gap between classical heritage and modern promotion.
